Tuition Services

I teach all ages and abilities and provide specialist tuition for dyslexia (and other special needs), general struggling readers/writers, English for speakers of other languages through to English for university dissertations and Business English.

     The Lessons

Lessons are generally once a week for an hour and fees are dependent upon the number of students sharing a lesson.

Typically, I provide 1:1 tailored tuition in my study in Didsbury, but sometimes group tuition is equally suitable.

Lessons begin with a thorough assessment. Once areas for development have been identified, lessons are tailored to individual needs and learning style, with clear, achievable aims.

My students make excellent progress because I transmit my enthusiasm, make lessons fun and apply a multi-sensory teaching approach which includes drawing on my extensive bank of learning resources, many of which I have personally designed to accommodate all areas and individual needs.

If required, computer-skills can be embedded into lessons.

Availability

During term-time I generally tutor weekdays until 8 p.m., but work minimum hours during school holiday periods.

Please access my contact page HERE to enquire about current availability.

Generally, I am fully booked with a long waiting list in operation for after school hours. Should this be the case when you make your application,  I will endeavour to let you know as soon as a suitable place becomes available. Due to being oversubscribed for after school hours, priority will be given to students who live and/or are educated locally, particularly those with siblings I have taught.

Child Tuition

Lessons are mapped to the National Curriculum for all key stages, including the following areas:

11+ Preparation Spelling Strategies Handwriting
Comprehension Grammar Vocabulary
Essay Writing Punctuation Reading
Creative Writing SATS Preparation Speaking & Listening
Planning & Structure Exam Strategies Verbal Reasoning

My enhanced CRB clearance to work with children and vulnerable adults is up-to-date and available to view on request, along with my professional qualifications.

I have wide experience teaching very diverse abilities from severe learning difficulties, autism, sensory impairments, literacy-related learning difficulties to exceptionally gifted children.

Children require my tuition services for a variety of reasons, though the majority come to me for 11+ grammar school entrance examination preparation, in particular Manchester Grammar, Stockport Grammar, Withington Girls', Manchester High, Cheadle Hulme and the Trafford Grammar schools. Over many years I have gathered an extensive bank of past and sample entrance exam papers for these and other grammar schools and my success rate in procuring places into them (including places for students with literacy-related learning difficulties) is exceptional: 100% in 2014 and 2015 for preferred/top grammar schools.

I often work with the same family over a number of years for several siblings, and the majority of my students come to me by word of mouth.

Adult Tuition

Many of my adult students come to me simply to ‘brush up’ on their English skills, while others are concerned about their work-related English or their uncertainty about how to support their children's literacy.

Some require ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tuition, while others, due to a variety of reasons,  have missed much of their formative education and require Basic Literacy tuition. Some have literacy-related learning difficulties and come to me to learn strategies to overcome their barriers to learning.

I also support students with their academic dissertations and vocational training courses covering planning, research strategies, grammar, punctuation, proofreading and Harvard referencing.

Homework

I have high expectations for both my students and myself. Homework is therefore an integral component of my lessons to reinforce and practise what has been learnt. Equally, completed homework enables me to assess student understanding and inform future lesson planning.

The amount of homework will be negotiated and agreed on from the onset, and dependant upon the student's age and other commitments. Obviously, the more homework completed, the faster one’s progress will be.

Workplace English

For business clients wishing to improve employees' English to ensure they are communicating services and products effectively, I offer group tuition within the workplace or one-to-one from my study in Didsbury.

Once I have identified common needs (for group teaching) and individual needs, I tailor learning plans to individual needs and the company's business profile.

Embedded or stand-alone Basic Computing tuition can also be delivered if required.

Anything else

Just ask and I will be delighted to assist. For details of my qualifications, experience and fees please follow the links at the top and bottom of each page.
