My
specialism is preparing children for grammar school entrance exams of
which I have 25 years experience. I
teach all abilities and provide specialist tuition for dyslexia (and other special needs),
general struggling readers/writers, English for speakers of other
languages through to English for university dissertations and Business
English.
The
Lessons
Lessons are generally once a week for an hour and
feesare dependent
upon the number of tutees sharing a lesson.
Typically,
I provide 1:1 tailored tuition in my home in Didsbury (or remotely during
lockdowns), but group tuition is
an option if preferred.
Once areas for development have been identified from a thorough
assessment, lessons are tailored to individual needs and learning style,
with clear, achievable goals.
My
tutees make excellent progress because I transmit my enthusiasm, make
lessons fun and apply a multi-sensory teaching approach which includes
drawing on my extensive bank of learning resources, many of which I have
designed to accommodate all areas and individual needs.
Availability
During term-time I generally
tutor weekdays until 7 p.m., and restrict tuition to the minimum during school
holiday periods.
Please
access my contact page HERE to enquire
about current availability.
Generally, I am fully booked
with a waiting list for after school hours. Should
this be the case when you apply, I will endeavour to let
you know as soon as a place becomes available.

I hold an
enhanced
DBS certificate to work with children
and vulnerable adults which is available
to view on request, along with my professional qualifications.
I have wide experience
teaching diverse abilities from severe learning difficulties, autism,
sensory impairments, dyslexia to
exceptionally gifted children.
Over many years I have gathered an extensive
bank of past and sample entrance exam papers for leading grammar
schools, and my success rate in procuring places into them (including
places for tutees with dyslexia) is exceptional.
I often work with the same
family over a number of years for several siblings, and the majority of my
tutees come to me by word of mouth.
Adult Tuition
Many of my adult tutees come to me simply to ‘brush
up’ on their English skills, while others are concerned about their work-related
English or their uncertainty about how to support their
children's literacy.
Some
require ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tuition, while
others, due to a variety of reasons, have missed much of their
formative education and require Basic Literacy tuition. Those with
dyslexia come to me to learn strategies to overcome their barriers to learning.
I
also support tutees with their academic
dissertations and vocational training courses covering planning, research strategies, grammar, punctuation,
proofreading and Harvard referencing.
Homework
I
hold high expectations for both my tutees and myself. Homework is
therefore an integral component of my lessons to reinforce and practise
what has been learnt. Equally, completed homework enables me to assess tutee understanding and
inform future lesson planning.
The amount of homework will be negotiated and agreed on from the onset,
and dependant upon the tutee's age and other commitments. Obviously,
the more homework completed, the faster one’s progress will
be.
